Wilmington is a lot more than just an awesome downtown section, the best hospital in eastern North Carolina is in Wilmington. New Hanover Regional Medical Center is one of the top medical centers in the state, ranking #3 in 2015. Excellent medical care is always an important aspect when considering where to retire, with the large New Hanover network, you will be in good hands here.

On the north side of downtown a new performing arts center was opened in October of 2015. This is the second large theater to open in Wilmington. Thalian Hall is the other which has been operating since the 1800’s. 

Wilmington has all of the major box stores and retail shopping that you would expect to find in any large city, Mayfaire Town Center which is a newer outdoor urban mall is on the east side of town and Independence Mall which is your typical indoor mall is located in the center part of town. Along with the malls, you will find Trader Joes, Hobby Lobby, Whole Food, Costco, Sams Club, and many other businesses that many folks are accustomed to. 

There are two colleges in Wilmington, the University of North Carolina at Wilmington (UNCW) has an enrollment of 17,000 students and Cape Fear Community College in downtown has approximately 7,000 students each semester.
