Sunset Beach

Sunset Beach is the smallest barrier island in Brunswick County. About 3 miles separate the east end from the west end. Sunset Beach is the southern most developed beach in North Carolina. South of Sunset Beach there are some uninhabitable islands and then you enter South Carolina. Sunset Beach is one of the premiere beaches in Brunswick County. It was ranked the #1 barrier island in the state by Duke University.

Things To Do In Sunset Beach

On the far west end of the island, past the homes and beyond where the road ends, there is a mailbox stuck in the sand. Inside the mailbox there is a notepad and pen that folks come from all over to write whatever is on their minds. This mailbox has been a tourist attraction for many years, though not everyone knows about.

Up until 2010, the only access onto the island was a single lane swing bridge that was operated by a bridge tender, the DOT started construction on a mega bridge in 2008 and opened it in 2010. The old bridge was preserved and now sits on the mainland side and serves as a museum. Many people have memories of coming to the beach as a kid and having to wait 15-30 minutes for their turn to get on the bridge, although the new bridge isn’t quite as appealing or charming, it is perhaps more functional.
